Understanding Trichology (1).png

1. What is Trichology?

Trichology is the scientific study of disorders of the hair and scalp.  It was founded and established in London, England in 1902.

2. When should you see a Trichologist?

You should see a Trichologist when you have problems with hair breakage, hair loss, or other disorders concerning your hair and scalp. A trichologist can help treat these problems if it falls within the scope to do so.

3. How to find a qualified Trichologist?

Always do your research before you see a trichologist. Salon stylists are not qualified trichologists and they do not have an extensive knowledge of the scalp like a trichologist has. Angie Isaacs received trichology training through the International Association of Trichologists.

“The International Association of Trichologists (IAT) is a non-profit corporation founded in California in 1974 to promote the study, research and legitimate practice in all aspects of the treatment and care of the human hair and scalp in health and disease.”

4. What is the difference between a Trichologist and Dermatologist?

Trichologists are hair and scalp specialist.  They help people with problems of the hair and scalp.  Dermatologists are medical doctors who specialize in the physiology and pathology of the skin.  If the answer is not apparent, a trichologist and dermatologist can work together to help you find out why you are losing your hair.  In some cases a trichologist will refer you to a doctor if the hair loss or scalp condition needs medical attention.
